What is Mental Health First Aid?

Mental Health First Aid is a training programme that teaches people to recognise the signs and symptoms of mental health problems, provide initial support, and guide people toward appropriate professional help. It is not a substitute for professional mental health treatment, but rather the psychological equivalent of physical first aid — providing immediate support until professional help is available.

The Business Case

The economic case for investing in workplace mental health is compelling. The Deloitte Centre for Health Solutions estimates that poor mental health costs UK employers between £42 billion and £45 billion per year, through a combination of presenteeism (reduced productivity while at work), absenteeism, and staff turnover. Legal Framework

While there is currently no specific legal requirement for employers to appoint Mental Health First Aiders, the general duty under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 to ensure the health, safety and welfare of employees extends to mental health. The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 require employers to assess all workplace risks, including psychosocial risks.

What Does a Mental Health First Aider Do?

A trained Mental Health First Aider in the workplace can: notice the signs of mental health problems; start a supportive conversation; listen non-judgementally; reassure and support a person in distress; encourage the person to seek professional help; and know how to respond in a crisis situation, including where someone is at risk of suicide or self-harm.

MHFA England recommends that organisations aim for a ratio of one Mental Health First Aider per 10 employees, though the appropriate ratio will depend on the nature of the work and the specific mental health risks in the workplace.
